JS Sloane, Heavyweight brilliantine – heavy water based gel pomade

Company – product

JS Sloane heavyweight brilliantine is a water based pomade, ‘gel’ pomade (more of a fiber texture), ‘orthodox’, ‘ringing’ gel pomade. Brilliantine? No, it is not: just marketing I guess. Fabricated in New York. They also carry a lightweight and a medium weight.

My hair profile

I’ve medium thick, wavy hair. I wear a side part with a contour. I used a wide tooth comb plus a brush with wild boar hair. At the time I used this, my hair was shorter (long enough to make a side part and small contour).

Presentation

Jars are made of plastic, amber tint, 4 oz size. Pink color. Has not the regular, typical gel pomade texture. More of a fiber texture (recalls Bona fide fiber).

Ingredients

Water, Ceteareth-25, Polyyurethane-14, Glycerin, AMP-Acrylates Copolymer, Propylene Glycol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Polysorbate-20, PVP, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Butylphenyl Methylpropinal, Limonene, Linalool, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Red 33, Yellow 5, Titanium Dioxide, Mica.

Scent

Very sweet, candy smell. Overwhelming. Smelled this the entire day: too sweet, follows as a shadow: not my cup of tea. Someone sensitive to scents, can be bothered by this.

Application process – result

No problem to get out of the jar. No thick but a very sticky consistency. Breaking it down: piece of cake. You rather use this on damp hair because of its stickiness, by doing so you’ll avoid tons of tug and pull. Don’t need much product (2 average scoops). Take small scoops, don’t take too much because this will weight down the hair. Grip: very strong immediately. Didn’t style that easy, not comfortable for me: styling took longer than expected. There’s a bit of tension when slicking the hair back. Hair maintained shape after the initial styling. Hairstyle: not that great, not the best. No great height neither. Tamed my cowlicks alright. It straightened my waves. Held down my sides alright.

Shine

Starts with little shine and dulls.

Hold – endurance

Hold is a heavy as mentioned on the label. For me this is accurate. This pomade keeps the hair well in place during the day: few strays but that’s it. Wind, a bit of rain, some heat don’t destroy what you’ve created. At the start, it feels like wearing a helmet, a hair gel, so sticky! After the JS Sloane dried, I didn’t feel the hard gel feeling anymore. Maybe because I did not use that much or duet to the fact I applied it on slightly wet hair. Pomade just settled. On damp or dry hair: more firming up. Tamed cowlicks and waves alright. Sides held down okay, no splits of the hair.

Restyling

Water for sure. Hold was still okay afterwards. But restyling isn’t the case most of the time! Does not flake.

Washing out

Just water. Hair and scalp feel slightly dry and coarse. But all this said: it ‘s still an orthodox, those tend to dry out.

Hair, scalp issues

No allergies, itching.
